- dealing with automatic transcription of music, specifically, statistical modeling of the inverse process to superposition of audio samples that is performed in music sequencers. The inverse process results in a retrieval of music information such as notes in a polyhony, kind of music sounds, etc. In general, the gathered MIDI-like information is utilized by applications or services, which, e.g., can identify music song excerpt with fingerprints of a music database (SHAZAM - iPhone), e.g., can be directly used for chord or melody extraction as a help tool for musicians, or, e.g., group music songs according to a content property like name of an artist or a style. The need of such services becomes more important since the amount of music data increases rapidly and it is unconceiveable that most of it will be tagged by hand.
