About Pilsen

Pilsen (Plzeň) – a city in western Bohemia in the Czech Republic. It is the capital of the Pilsen Region and with more than 165 000 inhabitants the fourth most populous city in Czechia. Since its foundation in 1295, the City of Pilsen has become an important cultural, economic, transport, commercial and industrial center, known primarily for the products of Pilsner brewery (Pilsner Urquell) and Škoda company. It is located about 90 km west of Prague (Praha) and it is easily accessible by the D5 motorway.

Pilsen is a centre of academic and cultural life for the western part of the Czech Republic. Besides about forty secondary schools and training colleges, it is the home to the University of West Bohemia and the Medical Faculty of the Charles University. The J. K. Tyl Theatre and the Alfa Theatre belong to the highlights of Pilsen cultural life, together with about twenty galleries and many alternative cultural projects.

The most significant sights of Pilsen are the Gothic St. Bartholomew's Cathedral, founded in the late 13th century, the Renaissance Town Hall, a 20km historic underground cellar network, and the Moorish Revival Great Synagogue, the second largest synagogue in Europe.

In recent years, the City of Pilsen has become a sought after destination for conference tourism thanks to its quality accommodation and new conference facilities.
